Dr. Jagadish Patgiri is a multi-dimensional personality who has worked extensively in the fields of drama, literature, culture, philosophy and social work. Due to his sincere and untiring efforts, he has managed to occupy a high position in Assamese society. He was born to Debendranath Patgiri and Harmaya Patgiri in 1960 in the village of Bamakhata, near Pathsala of Assam. At the age of four, his father died and thus, he had to lead a life full of struggles. However, despite adverse situations, Dr. Patgiri displayed some exceptional characteristics right from his childhood.

 

He first studied at the Pub-Bamakhata Primary School then Jalah High School and then went on to complete his matriculation from Choukhuti High School. His Pre-University and B.A.(Hons) in Philosophy was completed from Bajali College, Pathsala; and his Masters degree in Philosophy was completed from Gauhati University in Assam.

 

He had to take up teaching at Dhomdhoma College while pursuing a Masters degree from Gauhati University due to financial constraints. After completing his M.A., he first served as a Lecturer at S.B.M.S. College (Sualkuchi) for a period of three years; and then at Diphu Government College from 1988 to 1992. Dr. Patgiri is currently a Professor at Cotton College, Guwahati, Assam. He has been associated with the department of Philosophy at what is today known as the Cotton College State University since 1992.

 

Dr. Patgiri has been making significant contributions by publishing a series of academic and non-academic books right from the budding days of his academic and professional career.

 

Dr. Patgiri has been recognized nationally for his active participation in theatre as a dramatist, producer and composer. He became a key figure in drama for not only lending it with new concepts, but also experimenting with the mode itself. Some of his well known plays are 'Ajagar', 'Avijatra', 'Kuri Satikar Nabam Dasak aru Ami', 'SriKrishna Arjun aru Gandiva', 'Droupadi', 'Taralir Akash', 'Silalipi', 'Agasti Yatra', 'Natun Purush', 'Basanta-Plawan', 'Agni yugar kahini','Atanka', 'Kalnag', 'Bishakta Prithivi', 'Narak-kunda, 'Chinha Yatra' 'Mahavir Lachit' and Ajagar (Hindi). He has also produced two documentaries, namely, the 'Asomar Yatravinoy' and 'Heritage of Cotton College' (English). Apart from these, two tele-dramas- Droupadi and Ajagar(Hindi - have also been produced by him ).

 

Kalantar is the famous novel written by Dr. Patgiri. Besides, he has written twelve other stories, many dance-dramas, and more than a hundred poems and songs. Some of the books which are written by him are 'Jivan are Jigasha', 'Natya aru Chetana', 'Natya Kala Deshe Deshe', 'The Philosophycal Tradition of Assam', 'Folklore and Folklife as Reflected Through Modern Assamese Social Drama', 'Thinking and Reasoning', etc. He has also edited many books including 'Adhunik Asomiya Natya Sambhar', 'Natakar Byavaharik Dish', 'Asom Anchalar Janajatiya Sadhukotha: Upadan aru Adhyan', 'Asom Sahitya Sabhar Bhashanavali' (5th version), 'Vramyamanor Nirbasita Natya Sambhar', 'Asom Sahitya Sabhar Ajivan Sabhya','Purbanchalar Bhasa Sahitya aru Sanskriti', 'Dr Jogen Bayanar Rachanavali', 'Nirvachita Asamia Ekangika Natiya Sambhar','Social Concerns in Indian Philosophy', etc.

 

Apart from his literary achievements, Dr. Patgiri has been associated with different cultural activities. He is one of the rare people to have succeeded in establishing 'Chaturangam' as the famous cultural center in Guwahati. He was also instrumental in building a gate that stands as a symbol of the Assamese people in front of the branch of the Guwahati office of the assembly. He is also associated with the All Assam New Writers and Silpi Sammittee. In 1985, when he was a student of University, he participated as a speaker in the seminar of Bihpuria conference where many stalwarts of Indian literature were present. The topic of the conference was Ramdhenu Parabarti Yugar Asomiya Sahitya. By joining this conference, Dr. Patgiri was associated indirectly with the Asom Sahitya Sabha. In 1989, he represented the Diphu Sahitya Sabha in the conference of Dumduma.

 

Being a renowned figure, he became the General Secretary of the Asom Sahitya Sabha for two consecutive terms during 2003-05 and 2005-07. At (give his age), he became the youngest person in history to have held the post. Significant developments have been achieved by the organization ever since due to Dr. Patgiri's inexorable efforts.

 

Dr. Patgiri is currently the editor of an International Journal on Humanities, namely, Manavayatan (The Humanosphere). He has participated in numerous National and International Conferences and seminars, presenting a number of research papers on a variety of topics in Thailand at the Thamasat University of Bangkok (2001), the Netherlands (2010),Germany (2010), South Korea (2012), Greece (Athens 2013), and many other countries.

 

He was highly praised in the seminar of International Congress of Social Philosophy where he read his research paper titled/on Neo-Vaishnavism and Social Philosophy of Srimanta Sankardeva. The seminar was held on February 23, 2001 in New Delhi. Dr. Patgiri has 30 other research articles to his credit that have been published by some of the most prestigious research centers of India and abroad.

 

He has also received the award for best direction, script writing and composing for his play- Ajagar- in a National Multilingual Drama Competition held in Raniganj in 2000 and has received national recognition for his another play - 'SriKrishna Arjun aru Gandiv'. His biography is published in Who's Who of Indian writers, Vol. 2 by Sahitya Akademi (1999) and in Biographia International, etc.

 

Dr. Patgiri received a Ph.D. for his thesis on 'Folklore and Folk life as reflected Through Modern Assamese Social Drama', for which he was praised even at the international level. He is currently developing a new theory of drama known as 'Patgiri's Doctrine of Philosophico-Theatre.'
